Privacy policy

Half is a free app for splitting shared expenses. This page explains what we store and why. We keep it short because we collect very little.
What we store
- Group data you enter: group names, the names you give people, expenses, amounts, notes, comments, receipt photos you attach, and payment handles (such as a Venmo username) you choose to share with your group.
- On your device: which groups you have opened and who you are in each one, kept in your browser or app storage so you don't have to sign in.
- If you sign in with email (optional): your email address, so your groups can follow you between devices.
- Basic server logs: IP address and request details, kept briefly to keep the service running and stop abuse.
What we don't do
- We don't sell your data or show ads.
- We don't move money. Pay links open another app (Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, UPI) with the amount filled in.
- Receipt scanning runs on your device. The photo is only uploaded if you choose to attach it to an expense.
How groups are shared
Every group has a private link. Anyone who has the link can see and edit that group, including payment handles and receipt photos, so share it only with people you trust. Group pages are hidden from search engines.
Exchange rates
When you pick a foreign currency, our server asks a public rates service (open.er-api.com, or Frankfurter for historical dates) for a rate. Only the currency codes and the date are sent.
Keeping and deleting data
Group data is kept until the group is deleted. To have a group deleted, contact us at the address on the support page with the group link. Deleting an expense hides it for everyone and can be undone for a short time.
Who processes your data
Our hosting provider (Vercel) and database provider (Neon) process data on our behalf. Data is encrypted in transit.
Children
Half is not directed at children under 13.
Changes
